“A major strength of this study is that it presents vital information about Asian Indians relating to their current attitudes and levels of assimilation in the United States. Strong indications suggest that the first generation Asian Indians highly value family closeness. The once cherished practices such as dowry, caste system, and other pseudo-religious practices are becoming less important among the moderates and the assimilators because there is a growing interest for the Western style of living. Changes in parenting style, arrangement of marriages, attitude towards divorce, parental expectations, and eating habits are some key impact areas that immigration has had on the Asian Indian culture. Reports of discrimination do exist, although the first generation is relatively comfortable in the host society. The thought of returning to India for permanent residency is seldom entertained by those who have stayed longer in the United States. In general, the Asian Indian population continues to grow as an ethnic force that highly esteems family values.”
